Imported kicad symbol for IRF9Z24SPBF but can't associate it with the footprint

Pardon the noobness of the question, but after many many years with <alternate PCB design program> I'm switching over to kicad and some of it's ways are baffling me.

I've managed to d/l and import the kicad library for the Vishay IRF9Z24SPBF symbol and imported the library for the 'pretty' footprints, but somehow the symbol is not associated with the footprint and darned if I can find even the vocabulary for how to associate a footprint in the library with a symbol in the library. Could someone possibly point me in the right direction?
