Title: Flux for Selective
Post by: DLE on March 05, 2024, 04:44:14 pm
Hi All, we are getting into selective soldering and had a question on flux choice.

I prefer a no-clean flux and we have on hand a decent amount of Kester 951 and 110 thinner.  However, I wasn't sure if there was a reason to not just use that in the selective machine or if there was a good reason to go get something like the Kester Select-10 that they say is geared for selective operations.

flux needs to meet certain objectives in wave soldering process generally speaking. It needs to resist being washed off by the solderwave ( jet?).

I wish I could source the Kester selective soldering flux. I am using an AIM flux. There are times when a second pass is called for and a second application of flux cures the problem.

Kester 10 is available through usual culprits.
Price is not the problem... volume is.
Large players of this world are offering it at a minimum volume of say 12 gallons...
Others listed on Kester web pages similarly want to sell it by the gallons.
I don't mind purchasing a gallon just to try it out but I am being asked to spend thousands of dollars just to taste ( and test).

PREPOSTEROUS

I may try to import the flammable fluid from Singapore.
