If Digikey says "obselete", what does it mean?
« on: July 02, 2022, 11:31:37 am »
Hi,
When digikey says  "obselete", does that mean "obselete  for digikeys approved  manufacturers", or that the product is not made any more , anywhere?

Eg SG3525
https://www.digikey.co.uk/en/products/detail/onsemi/SG3525ADW/1485675
'Perfection' is the enemy of 'perfectly satisfactory'

In this case in section on documentation You will find EOLnotice from ON semi.
Product no longer manufactured since 2007/8.

What his means ...go to manufacturers website and look for EOL notices for meaning of life.

That was an old part number which was replaced by lead-free SG3525ADWR2G (reel) and SG3525ADWG (in tubes, no longer made too)

It means that this particular part number, from this particular manufacturer, is obsolete.

Digikey themselves list active variants of the SG3525 in various package options and from three different manufacturers (Onsemi, STM, Microchip). Only one part number is both active and in stock however, the SOIC16 package from Onsemi: https://www.digikey.de/de/products/detail/onsemi/SG3525ADWR2G/1485283

Yes. Lead is now banned in much of the world and it's cheaper to make the same lead free part to sell all over the world, making the leaded versions obsolete.

"Obsolete" is a writing on the wall that you should not use this part for new designs and possibly redesign your existing products that use it becausd it may become unobtanium.

Not necessarily. Often it's just the lead package is obsolete, or they've stopped doing the through hole versions. The MC34072 is a classic example of this. They stopped making the through hole versions many years ago, but seem to want to continue to produce the surface mount versions.

OBSELETE means someone at digikey can’t spell.
Dictionaries might help with the meaning of a common word.

Don't ask a question if you aren't willing to listen to the answer.

Grab some while you can from Rochester:

https://www.rocelec.com/part/ONSSG3525ADWG

PS: We have sourced many parts from Rochester and the parts are real; always fair priced and original.

Digi-Key might also say "obsolete" instead of "in last time buy phase". I've seen this recently. Still not a good sign!

Yep, Rochester is legit, don't hesitate to buy from them if you like their offer. I'll admit they often look sketchy as hell though!
