Looking for good value fume hood.
« on: November 15, 2016, 02:29:18 pm »
I operate a 1 man electronics lab supporting manufacturing and refurbishment operations at a company where electronics is not the primary focus. The board lab is temporarily being moved to a new location while construction and other renovations take place at the primary site in preparation for some major contracts we have won. The room I am being moved into is much smaller than what I have now and does not have a ventilation system sufficient to support stripping, soldering, staking, and coating operations. I am looking at options for fume hoods and an ERV ventilation system. The new room does abut an exterior wall so we can punch a vent hole if need be. I have done some searching and am not liking the options I am finding. Does anyone have a fume hood setup either at work or their home lab that can make some recommendations?  Maybe post a picture or two so I can get some inspiration?

Don't know if any of your use cases really need a lab grade fume hood, as it sounds like you may just need a extraction system.
I've got one of these which may suit your requirements, and while not cheap is probably a lot cheaper than a true fume hood.

You can get smaller models, and with various filtering options.  This one is actually a bit big for my use, but I got it for free  ;D

That is definitely a possibility. Looks like something that would not be too hard to transfer back to the primary location after the construction is finished. Plus from time to time we do some minor painting on various fixtures and tools we build for the things we work on this would be a lot better than the find an empty corner of the building and put down some cardboard and or newspaper to spray paint things system that we have now.

Yes, even this bigger model dismantles sufficiently to make it pretty easy for one person to move it around.
Unfortunately I've only found it available through UK companies, and my local Aussie distributor.

If you can punch a hole through an exterior wall as you suggest, it will open up inexpensive options vs. a formal fume hood (whether it be a range hood or some DIY solution)..  :-+

I would still need to find an ERV solution so I am not blowing all my conditioned air to the outside During this winter or next summer since I might be in the new location for a while. We are in the Northeast so winter is a concern. Bosses would appreciate me not messing with the heating and A/C bill.

Sounds like you only need an HRV (I'm assuming you don't have moisture issues). Take a look here if you're up for DIY'ing one (I'd suggest aluminum sheet for better efficiency & it's easy to work with). There's YouTube videos on how to build them as well.
