Metcal tips -- SSC vs SxP
« on: June 19, 2017, 06:19:03 am »
As the title says, what's the difference between SSC and SxP for the same temperature grade?
Say, SSC-7xx series 775F tip temperature cartridges vs SFP series 790F tips?
It seems like Metcal advertises SSC series to be able to deliver more power, but they are both 60W cartridges, and that puzzles me.
Their website also suggests SSC series is to maintain backward compatibility of outdated SP200 series.

So, is SSC any better than SFP series for soldering large joints? I want to be able to solder some large joints on 2oz copper, and I don't have the budget for a 250W JBC or Metcal MX500. What I have is only a Metcal 1100 series and an FX-888D. I won't hesitate spending $100 on an SSC handle and a cartridge, though, but I want to know it is better then my collection of SFP cartridges.

BTW, I also need a recommendation on Metcal tips, which is better for drag soldering? My current chisel and conical ones both bridges, and I don't have a hoof one to try. It seems like a hollowed hoof one is better, but I don't know if there is a Metcal tip that is hollowed hoof shaped (like Hakko BCM series).

Thanks in advance.
