Interesting smt feeder
« on: September 27, 2018, 09:21:02 pm »
I found this rather a different solution to the feeder problem.
Just a box full of components and by rotation and mechanically "filtering" and manouvring end like a stickfeeder. Would be nice to have a very small version for 0402 and 0603 of this  :)

These are typically called vibratory bowl feeders. They are awesome when they work but a pain when they are not tuned correctly. I would be worried about the vibration damaging and cracking smaller components. A smt line with these would be huge since you would not get the density of feeders. Also if you were doing post placement AOI you would not necessarily get the component in a desirable orientation.

Very common in LED strip companys.   The cost of putting LEDS in tapes can exceed the cost of the compoents sometimes.   Getting them raw is just about saving money.

If looking for smaller size components, then have a look at this bulkfeeder:

and only about $21,000 per feeder for those bulk feeders.  Mind you can you stack nearly 400,000 parts in them.    AT placement rates of 50,000 parts/hour its only a shift full.

Nobody asked for prices, OP said he would like to see that for smaller components ;)

I doubt a bowl feeder would work for small chip parts - they are to small & would jump around a lot.

How do they deal with orientation/polarity?

Vibratory feeders are mostly for smaller components. Does anyone use any other kind of feeder for 0201 and smaller?

The one i saw had optical recognition on it.  If it wasnt the right way it got knocked back into the bowl..  the parts always seemed to get into the track the right way up, but not the right way around..   I'm guessing on average this means that the parts made at least two trips up the track.

Plenty of parts avialable on tape for 0201.     Not sure what you do smaller than that.   I dont' even want to think about it.

Yes, they are available, but only the better machines can handle them. However, the better machines also offer vibratory feeders, most of them far more compact than the one which started this thread. This makes we wonder if many people really use the taped parts, when the solid block packaged parts are considerably cheaper.

From what i understand, the cartrige / bulk part feeders are quite common in the factorys that are making super high volumes ( cell phones / mother boards / tvs etc ).  These are set up as high volume / low mix machines.   For what i do, which is low volume, / high mix the tape feeders are more common. ( and MUCH cheaper. ) an 0201 8mm feeder is only $80 or so, takes up one slot.  Compare that to a $20,000 feeder...  SUre its much slower...
