Paste flux

(1/1)

ramicio:
Radio Shack only has paste flux in store, not the pens of the clear liquid.  Can I use the thick paste to reflow?  I just want to use it on something already soldered to break the surface tension and try to make sure there are no shorts by heating it again.

MacAttak:
You can probably order a pen of fresh high-quality flux and have it shipped 2nd-day more cheaply (or close to it) than the crap they sell at Radio Shack these days. For most tasks, Kester 186 works really well and is a widely recommended brand - and sells briskly enough that you don't have to worry about it being old.

ramicio:
I guess I will just go on eBay and order a pen of that flux from the closest seller.  Thanks!

nanofrog:
You can also get liquid flux in small containers (i.e. MG Chemicals sells rosin flux in 125ml and quart containers), and put it into pens yourself.

SRA also sells a refillable kit as well (link is rosin, but they also have other formulations if you prefer) http://sra-solder.com/product.php/7048/141/sra_99_20_rma_rosin_flux_pen_with_5_refills

Cheaper than buying disposable pens, and still end up with excellent quality supplies.

ramicio:
Thanks for that.  I don't do enough of this work to need that much.  If by some miracle people started getting interested in the stuff I make then I might need more volume.
