^^ what he said. This is why I advise not to use an SM connector without good reason. If you are working in volume or need to, fine, otherwise SM connectors can need tooling (bye bye labour saving) or available stock in a very specific part number that adds a pick pad to the connector, or placing with tweezers - maybe not as straight as you'd like. I can only assume some machines do use some form of gripper or the versions without pick pads would not exist, however plenty of machines don't have that option. Its not just male pin headers that have this problem, pin sockets can have the same issue as the holes dissipate too much of the vacuum,but some machines might not care or let you turn off the vacuum check for specific parts.
