Rapid Feeder - A new type of SMT feeder
« on: February 08, 2021, 10:06:16 pm »

Thought I would share a project we've been working on at Deltaprintr that will soon be available to those building their own PNP machines. If advertising isn't allowed here, please let me know.

Seeing how there's a good variety of feeders on the market, most which cost over $100, we've decided to design a lower cost feeder that can interface with any machine and is well documented. It's geared towards being used with OpenPNP and the software already has the Rapid Feeder feature incorporated into it to try out for those that have OpenPNP. The biggest takeaway is that the Rapid Feeder is only 2mm wider than the tape it feeds. So if you're feeding 8mm tape, you'd use a 10mm wide feeder. This allows you to stack many feeders close together. In addition, there's no need for dedicated feeder banks for different widths because the feeders mount onto two 10mm OD linear rods and snap in. So you can mount them anywhere along the length of the rods without any gaps.

Some specs on the feeder:
  • Minimum component recommended: 0603 (but we think it can do 0402, still waiting on some more production parts to test this)
  • Minimum tape pitch: 2mm
  • Uses QR UUID codes to identify feeders - no need to manually populate feeders in OpenPNP. Just scan with camera and it loads all of them.
  • Runs on RS485
  • Injection molded and stamped parts. (some stamping tooling we've already brought up to make components of the feeder: https://youtu.be/uvOQGHKV0vs

If anyone would like to see how the project started and is progressing, feel free to check out the OpenPNP thread here: https://groups.google.com/g/openpnp/c/tHkY0duicdI/m/99CWASUgAgAJ

More specs, drawings and a 3D CAD STEP model download available on our website: https://www.deltaprintr.com/product/rapid-feeder/

If you have any questions about features, etc. feel free to ask! We're about to open tooling for the injection molded parts after CNY and hope to start shipping mid-end April.
