I guess this is the right section.

Sagan soldering his first board, with hardly any instruction.

Aah, the knight rider lights! You should have him watch an episode of that TV show. Was a favorite of my childhood  :)

He was doing quite well.  And seemed to be enjoying it.    My first electronics where the Dick Smith Funway books.  Had cup hook things that you screwed components down on.

How do you impedance match those wires on that science fair kit.

That's awesome! What a lucky kid.

Safety glasses don't seem to be common with soldering but they're not a bad idea.  I've flicked solder into my face a few times while tinning wires.  Push wire away from you with iron then iron slips off wire then wire springs towards you and launches solder at you.  Glasses are good for trimming leads too.

Hes showing a good deal of manual dexterity which is quite uncommon for kids that young.  Get him on SMT asap.

Get some better lighting Dave, he's too young to have to get so close to see what he's doing.

Anyways, great to see getting started at that age.  ;D  :-+

Next step, component identification and correct placement.

Cool!  how old is Sagan if you don't mind me asking? My son is 7 and seems to be showing an interest in something more than snap circuits style stuff.

He wasn't keen to solder before this so I didn't try. But the other day he said he was keen to try and solder a kit, so  :-+

Probably a shorter iron shape would be better for little hands?

I don't even want to mention that photo.

I smell the smell of burning flesh in my minds eye every time I look at it.

 :-+ well done!

I agree to get him on smd asap.

Don't remember, when I used the first time an iron, but for sure I've been older than 7
