SSOP, SOIC, SOT adapter boards with ground plane.
« on: October 29, 2017, 09:38:13 pm »
There are plenty of adapter boards you can find on the market, like this:

Usually, one side of the board is SSOP and another is SOIC, or one sided with traces on the back. What I 've been searching, is a board where back side is a ground plane. Can't find any so far. Does someone seen such adapters ?
I have some ideas for RF parts to solder in  SOT236, and audio codec in ssop28 packages, and pretty sure parameters may significantly deteriorate w/o having ground planes.

given super cheap PCB manufacturing in China, I would just design some up and send them off to a pcb house. Might even cost less and take about the same time as mail order. AllPCB is running a $5 for 10 boards, free shipping special.

Well, I'm sure that each IC will have ground on a different pin, so you would have to make a custom order in order to actually connect the IC to the bottom ground plane. Wouldn't having a large copper plane connected to nothing (as would be the case with a standard one size fits all adapter) just make it worse for RF applications, as it would act as an antenna instead?

Sure, ground plane itself must be grounded -); somewhere.
After posting here, I continue my research on google, and it was not completely fruitless. There are at least two options on the market, with separate pin for the ground

and soldering bridges

Second case may provide enough space for small decoupling capacitors on power pins.
The only problem for me right now is the price, that I was not expecting to be ~50x higher compare to common adapters on aliexpress I've ordered before. And as an amateur/ hobbyist I don't have a personal account with shipping company, sadly.

If price is an issue, you can buy a roll of copper tape or some 7 mil thick single sided FR4 copper clad and some glue. And drill and stitch some vias?

If you don't have this stuff in your kit, yet, don't worry. You will.

Well, here's one way to do it. Uses solder jumpers with a via to gnd. Close the one that is the ground pin. The bottom is a solid plane. This is kind of a frankenboard but then intent is to slice it apart into one 8 pin and one 14 pin soic adapter. The transistors are to make the board multi-use. I'm sure it will be a noisy board but then the intent is to use it in a solderless breadboard.

I ordered from AllPCB in China: got 10 of them in 6 days and cost me $5.49 USD, free shipping.  You can order it from OSHPark as I shared the design - 3 for $15 USD. Not as cheap but not terrible. https://oshpark.com/profiles/dual-soic-adapter-with-gnd. I get no money from this by the way. Willing to make changes and can provider gerbers.

OK, I decided to clean that board up and make it snappable for OSH Park. $11.75 USD for 3.

I like that solder bridge to ground idea, nice going.
