Strip feeder using aluminium LED profile
« on: November 25, 2016, 12:08:22 am »
Hi,

I have just come up with one idea using custom hardware (aluminum LED profile) as a strip feeder for pick & place machines.
The idea is to insert the strip inside the grooves of the profile. This idea also lets you remove one strip/profile at a time when
replacing strips. You don't need to remove the whole strip tray which can cause components to fall out of their pockets.
After some searching, I have only found profiles that I believe will fit 12 mm tapes.
Link for example profile: https://ledsale.no/line-aluminum-profile.html
I will buy that one and test for 12 mm tape. One solution for other tape sizes could be to cut the profile into two halves on the long side,
and then place a strip as a guide and then glue the halves onto another thing.

If someone finds some sources for other profile sizes which may fit 8 mm, 16 mm and etc, please post here.

I designed and built a strip feeder that covers any size tape. Its not trivial task as I learned.

What machine is your target?

Good progress here on a universal strip feeder.

My machine is the m10v. For strips I currently I use a mix of double sided adhesive tape where many strips are placed (on removable plates),
which is a mess with respect to change of strips.
The nice thing with it being removable is that then I can remove the whole plate and put it in my dry cabinet for storage.

I also have some strip lanes from the manufacturer. These are not removable - so it's not for parts that require dry cabinet storage,
and it does not work well for small parts because vibration causes parts to come out of their pockets.
The latter may be an issue with the alu profile as well.
Perhaps filling the space below the strip inside the profile with cotton (makeup removal type) will hold the parts tight.

Nice project in the link you provided!

That’s really a good idea. Also, I didn’t find any solution for this type of ground terminal. I am waiting for the solution.
