There are extensive descriptions on the internet.  Here's one: https://www.protoolreviews.com/rotary-hammer-vs-hammer-drill/#:~:text=A%20hammer%20drill%20is%20simply,a%20vibration%20against%20each%20other.

First step, you need to refine your question:  hammer drill, rotary hammer drill, or impact drill?  Impact drilling is like in the olden days when you used a star chisel and hammer to drill into concrete.  The mechanism was simple.  You hit the chisel with a hammer, rotated it a one eight turn (approximately) and hit again.   Repeat until you had a hole. If you are only drilling a few holes in soft concretious materials like mortar, you can use a carbide concrete drill in an ordinary variable speed hand drill.
