I've just started reading about this myself but thought I'd start a topic in case people find it interesting.

I wonder if it really is something new or has it been done before. It's open source so that could be good. Thanks.

Could be useful for automated testing or similar tasks. Still not cheap though:

Profile -> Modify profile -> Look and Layout ->  Don't show users' signatures

It would be great if you could record a sequence to automate repetitive tasks.
