best insulation tape?
« on: March 05, 2024, 08:20:06 am »
I am experimenting with cold fluids.

I have some annoying stuff to insulate like perestalic pump. I have a left over roll of 'frost king' tape that the adhesive is I guess non existant or not present, but it sticks a tiny bit. I cut it and I can stack it up/punch holes to insulate it. It has aluminum on one side.

I am wondering if there is a more premium product.

I am also interested in a thin insulating tape that has high strenght, in order to secure foam rubber tubing in hoses. On the tank etc I used aluminum covered duct tape, that is good for static applications IMO, but I need something that flexes good.

1) better static insulation tape (with aluminum)
2) better dynamic insulation tape for flex applications (hose insulation securing)

I want performance at -50C

A lot of adhesives will start acting funky at temperatures this low. Most won't have any technical specifications for such conditions even.

Tho to me it sounds like you need the insulation used on air conditioning lines. It is just some soft insulating material packed inside a plastic sleeve that you can slide over a pipe. Tho the insulation is not very abrasion resistant if you want to have this on a line that often gets dragged around on the ground. For that it might be a good idea to get some braided sleeving and slide that over top to protect it.

what is good for securing braid to foam tube, it is not rated to survive heat shrink most likely.

Well maybe. EPDM. Its close. Maybe carefully I can do it.

what have I done? my wallet is screaming at me that I should wrap a rag around it instead of buying 3m heat shrink and techflex braid  :palm:
i guess interconnects excellence is a habit

On the plus side, for couplers, you can use a size bigger silicone tubing segment, with this weak pump, it works.

Perhaps Nashua Snow & Ice Duct Tape, which is rated for -40°C?

https://nashuatape.com/

https://www.homedepot.ca/product/nashua-1-89-in-x-54-7-yd-snow-and-ice-duct-tape/1000463145

It is not -50°C, but perhaps it still keeps some adhesive at that temperature...

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...

Well maybe the heat shrink is a better idea.

This also looks interesting. i got the solid tube but interesting texture
https://www.amazon.com/BESUNTEK-Preservation-Conditioning-0-75-0-39/dp/B0BLHFB1LD?th=1

That tape might be useful for securing it to system elements like the pump though. I think the aluminum tape is better, but maybe the best solution is to use aluminum tape for insulation and the duct tape for the grip.

Actually kind of fun and cheap lol. a dry ice fluid bath would put things to the test. Next time you find a vacuum insulated thermos cup in the trash

a salt bath used for making ice cream with a copper tube heat exchanger in it can work. or your choice of solvent and dry ice, or the ice cream maker.

Yep this is one of the kinds of air conditioning line insulation.

This is the kind of braiding i been talking about:
https://www.amazon.com/100ft-Expandable-Braided-Sleeving-Sleeve/dp/B074GM1PK1

It doesn't rely on any adhesive to hold things together, and it would be on the outside of the insulation anyway. Tho they do fray apart at the ends unless they are held down, typically a short piece of heatshrink is used to terminate the ends.

Underneath you can just use whatever insulation you like.
