This is an interesting video I ran across. A cube is turned continuously, but the string attached to it doesn't get twisted.

I wonder if you could somehow use that principle to construct a homopolar disc generator or motor that doesn't need slip rings?

Hmm, perhaps. But is the solution worse than the problem -- how are you going to get all that current out? Surely not through cables, the amount of flex requires a lot of slack and discourages large amounts of it. :-//
