Otto Frei! I've been there! I shopped at their store when I lived in Oakland. Great resource for jewelers, watchmakers and repairers and others who need teeny-tiny tools and materials.

USD 12 for a sheet of sand paper?
No thank you.

And they don't even mention the size of the sheet or further specifications then just the grid size.

that sounds like emery cloth. its substrate is like a textile. Its durable and not as cheap.
https://www.amazon.com/Norton-Emery-Cloth-Medium-11-270/dp/B008EVBCPY?gQT=1d

it does not get creases when you try to sand a trench that basically ruin normal sand paper, which I hate

you can find norton specs on their website from the part number. Its considered a premium brand, meaning there is some secret to control of grit sizes and adhesive. i noticed cheap sand paper sucks

Cheap emery  cloth loses its abrasive fast and also disintegrates too easily and tears ugly. The cheap brand leaves you with a pile of abrasive after only moderate work (dirty)

typically if you hear emery despite the fact that its not a name for a rock, it means cloth

however, emery cloth is not suitable for lapping or flattening, which is why you want to stock both.

and its strong enough that its very dangerous on a lathe, potentially, don't wrap it around your fingers!!!

I never saw actual emery abrasive on paper either, if it was truely on paper then tis a super boutique product and I expect the price to be very high

for a ring, if its deformable, it means you can do polishing that is light on the hands by putting emery cloth over something like a thin piece of deformable foam, to get some conformal action. if you have to do 50 rings, having a big peice you can drag them over while avoiding loading is handy

keep in mind otto is a supplier for gold smith and stuff like that. the man hour that goes into making a  jewlery piece is very expensive compared to basically any materials, except for platinium lol

and good emery can last longer, and also its something that can tackle nasty burrs on the side of objects alot better, but its not THAT good that it will replace a f ile

It's no use stating all those generic tips about sandpaper here, I am familiar with them. The link I posted is also in the paper section, not in the "cloth" section. But the worst is that they can't even bother to put in a decent description for that particular type of sandpaper. For an USD12 sheet of sandpaper, I expect at least a link to a datasheet with all specifications of that particular sheet.

For "generic" info, I generally prefer 3M before Norton. I've got some from the 235U series and 255P series and both work well for me. Sometimes I put some packing tape on the backside to make the paper stronger. It's a lot cheaper then buying the cloth type, and for plenty of applications it's good enough.

their main market is fashion people, I think your expectations as a engineer are unrealistic

No, their main market is jewelers and watch repair people.
It's a great store. Surprised they're still in business.
