Do we need a 'Metrology' category?
« on: December 16, 2013, 04:29:40 pm »
Hi Forum,

A lot of our threads appear to be Metrology related (voltage references, resistance references, calibrators and calibration, etc.), so do you think we need a separate forum category for Metrology (probably as a sub-category under Electronics)?

Isn't that under test equipment?
Death, taxes and diode losses.

I'm just trying to see if anyone else (besides me) would like to have a "Metrology" category-- it's not important what *I* think, but rather what *you* think about this...
I, for one, don't see the need for a subforum about weather :)

"Test and Measurement" may get a wider audience

I replied the way I did because a large chunk of metrology has to do with statistics and math and felt that an alternative title may be better for the specific area of the subject we are interested in

Well merits of multiple categories has been debated before and I think the consensus is people don't want that.
Do it for Metrology and you have to do it for everything else...

I tend to agree with the general consensus, but feel there are some "awesome" threads buried in this forum which are difficult to locate and a possible pro for multiple categories is being able to easily narrow down an area of search. Aside from utilising keywords to tag a thread multiple categories are like default tags

Sure, but it's either go the whole hog and have a category for everything under the sun, or not.

This type of arguments even has a name ;-)

I read eevblog in a single Unread Posts list provided by the Web UI and Tapatalk so it does not matter for me much one way of another.  Some forum sites do have fine granularity groups, but this results in moderators moving threads more often because they were not submitted in the perfect matching group.

Everyone who agrees with you can just put "metrology" at the end of all their thread titles so you can search on that term. FWIW

One thing better than new categories is the ability to bookmark topics. The best you can do today is to reply to a thread and search your own posts.

I'm sure we did a poll on this argument a while back and the consensus was that people didn't want a whole bunch of categories.
So this is not just my decision, it has been debated before.
