Hifi copper spade lugs for low thermal EMF use
« on: July 03, 2022, 06:01:43 pm »
After recently coming down with a violent PPM addiction I was looking into low thermal EMF connectors.

I recently got 4x 3rd/4th hand copper spade lugs from one of the main group buys that happened here (closed unfortunately):
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/metrology/copper-low-thermal-hardware-%28group-order-for-postsspade-lugswashers%29/

Since then I've been trying to find some good sources and found that they all seem to be for "HIFI" and car audio use. do people have any experience with using these for low thermal EMF use? Does anyone know if they are actually pure copper or just copper plated?

On a side note what is the difference between tellurium and beryllium copper in terms of precision use? Is there a major difference in performance/longevity?

I too looked at the hifi connectors, but they have two drawbacks: they are expensive and they have large thermal mass.

If you don’t mind playing with dangerous acid, you can make your own from common spade lugs.

Tellurium copper is a "machinable" copper alloy--since pure copper is generally too soft to reliably work. Beryllium copper is often called "spring copper," which is a hard copper alloy used for high quality pins and sockets (like the center pin on a BNC connector or the spring in a Dupont MiniPV connector). Low cost pins/sockets use brass or phosphor bronze--the latter being the better of the two.

Many spade/ring terminals are copper plated with tin--which a citric/ascorbic/acetic acid bath will safely and easily remove (as cellularmitosis has shown).

Likeliest supplier on taobao

Turns out I'm not the only overseas buyer, I bought 53 lugs of 1mm thickness from this Taobao seller about 9 months ago, that's all he had at the time.

But wait, there's more...

Check out this site also for gold-plated spade lugs and shielded PTFE cable

Yeah this is more or less what I'm trying to do. Make a bunch of good quality low thermal emf cables. Then hand them out to some friends and list some on ebay or whatever. And probably list the connectors as well because there doesnt seem to be a decent european source for them atm.
