hobby calibration in ontario
« on: August 02, 2018, 07:07:13 pm »
I thought I recall, but cannot now find, a thread regarding inexpensive "hobby" calibration services.

I am contemplating what looks to be a good deal on a Keithley 2000 but it will require calibration against a reliable standard.  This is for hobby purposes and I won't need a cal certificate or certified traceability.  I have a quote for about $US 140 to have a full-on certified calibration in town here, which I think is pretty okay.  But if there's a cheaper sub-$100 hobby type service I would take that first.  Does anyone have any pointers on hobby type calibration in Ontario -- preferably Ottawa?

Cheaper sometimes means limited test items/accuracy :D

You could always get a reference from Doug at voltagestandard.com. I would get a VREF10-003 I think it's around $50. He's taking a break right now though but he'll be back in October.

That's how I calibrate my gear at the moment.

the cheapest way, to give for a performance report, then if you need you can recalculate measured value using this report.
140 CAD - I guess, it reasonable cheap, i paid 230 for NIST cert - but they did full re-calibration, said next time it will much expensive ...

usually lab will do calibration with a new constant, if the measure value don't fit in 1year accuracy range.  You may ask for 24hours accuracy, if it fit in 140.

Keithley known in inability for one range calibration, need an instruments for a full range ,  so it kinda difficult for a homemade calibration...

So did you buy it? I saw it on Kijiji for a pretty good price and it's not there anymore so I hope you did!  A little out of my price range unfortunately.

May I ask where you got the $140 quote? Last time I asked about a mere 5.5 digit Keithley 199 I got over $400, plus extra if adjustments were needed. I'd love to have one or more of my Keithely 2001's verified.

I did not wind up buying it.  At $250, it was a good deal.  If I didn't already have a Keithley 195A, I likely would have, but the extra capability was not something I could justify, even with a sweet price. It did have the errors on 306.2 in the self-test, but this seems to be a non-issue.

The cal quote I got was from Pylon Electronics in Ottawa.
