Title: Keithley 230-1 conversion to allow for remote sensing?
Post by: Cyclotron on November 29, 2024, 01:40:31 am
I recently picked up what I thought was a Keithley 230 voltage source. The one I got is a 230-1, which, based on my reading, would have been installed with 2 other components and a PC to do IC testing. Anyway, I would prefer to have a voltage source with remote sensing.
If you look at the pictures, you can see the 230-1 has been modified to add wires from the control board to the GPIB board, which I assume are used to allow the intended configuration to control the remote sensing voltages.

The hole is there for the remote/local switch, and the Molex connector appears to be just jumpered. I am looking to put in the banana jacks, wiring, and DPT switch to convert this from the BNC connectors to the 5 Bananas, allowing for remote sensing.
Does anyone have any experience with the 230-1?  Are the modifications I'm considering feasible?  I assume they are given the manual for the 230 shows the particular changes to allow the 230-1 function.

The unit works nicely and appears relatively young. 1992-1993

It looks like I'm just one of many unfamiliar with this sub-model. I have ordered some bits and bobs I'll want to use and test it. If I can confirm that the conversion works, I'll update this thread.

I've replaced the BNC connectors with binding posts, created the wire harness and installed the switch.  Pics attached. I've fired it up and left it running in my lab tonight. Tomorrow I will run some tests and attempt a calibration.

Other than mislabeling the Sense vs. Output and Common, things worked very well. Calibration (at least as much as my shop can do) went well and it provides very good results in my testing after calibration.  It won't be a replacement for my PDVSmini 2 but it will probably get used more for various projects.

I only have a standard K230, but thanks for documenting your results.
