Rohde & Schwarz HMS-X for EMC testing
« on: August 07, 2023, 07:14:28 am »
Hi,

I'm looking at a used Rohde & Schwarz HMS-X but haven't seen much talk on the forums about them.  I need to setup a EMC pre compliance test rig and thought this might be a decent used spectrum analyser fort the job.  The unit I'm looking at has the software upgrade for the TG, EMI options, 3ghz.  Anyone have any insight into these?

Thanks,

Owen

I have one of these. There's also a PC software suite that complements the EMI options on the spectrum analyser.
You may also want the close-field probes, LISN, and/or a suitable antenna.
Not sure I can offer an opinion of the kit as I don't have anything to compare it with, but it was intended for just this job.

Would you say you are generally happy with it?  Do you use yours for EMI testing? At the moment I only plan to use it for EMI testing.

It has quite a high noise level compared with more fancy equipment and I find it relatively slow in use, but neither of these should be much of a disadvantage for EMI. I haven't used it myself for that yet, thjough I will need to soon - I use it for general jobs as I bought it fairly cheaply and it's handy to have - takes up little space and is acoustically quiet.
