Making standard 10k resistor
« on: April 02, 2023, 05:57:29 am »
I have not posted in a while. Today I wanted to share an environmentally conscious design for a standard resistor:

It is using custom made pure copper binding posts:

PTFE (Teflon) wires to connect to the resistor:

4 wire connection is made to special ORGANIC RESISTANCE STANDARD material:

It initially came out to be around 7k Ohms. It will be trimmed to perfect 10,000 Ohms after setting. As a lead designed, I will personally eat everything that is trimmed of the resistor.

Here is a little more on construction in case you would want to make one of your own. Construction on the top of the pizza box is highly recommended. Responsibly grown and environmentally safe bamboo insulator is essential for proper functionality.

Organic material needs to be precision cut:

Heavy aluminum bus bars are needed for reliable contact:

Mode details on design:

If you have any ideas on improving the design, please let me know. I want to thank #leighcorrigall for his help in building the standard.

Belated Happy APRIL 1st to everybody.

you used wood as a dielectric  ???. It should be fused to a ceramic substrate.

In terms of c.t.e. the construction looks rather poor. ;)
Since we know how well wirewound resistors can perform I suggest to bifilar wound a resistive wire to a Wiener, as it gives a soft but well defined bobbin. Due to its texture it will put no pressure onto the resistive wire over temperature, but relax in axial direction. :P

A caramel casting would serve as a better more dimensionaly stable base plate compared to the wood block, so long its hermetically sealed. And you want some helix springs

Don't forget to fill the tank with oil formalin in order to match the other best designs on the market.
And, you definitely have to provide thermal/whatever instability curve with it.

Reminds me of TiN's unlocking of 3458A

and the improvements I made on Prema 5017 (improved noise and INL of ADC as well as improved reference) I was working on in the last months.

Sorry, same fault as always with standard resistor construction!  |O
That design definitely misses a thermometer inside the resistive mass!   :horse:
I propose to add a Piercing Thermometer 100 (PT100) for BBQ.  :bullshit:
This kind of Sensor should directly interface with your HP34970A DAQ/DMM

I'd think with the addition of a thermometer and application of the right voltage, you should be able to hit medium rare with extreme precision.

Hello!

Very nice construction!

If you allow I would say some advices:

1. There must be added the fifth blue post binding. It's the Guard. And it must be connected to your metal case. Some precision measurements may require The Guard connection starting from 10 kOhm.

2. Change the wood with some high insulation material (Teflon, for example).

The next resistor iteration may have custom options such as vegan leather, RoSH compliance, and more 'Zen' designs. Post-manufacturing options will include running the resistor at several 1000 volts to artificially age the resistor while enjoying the fresh smell of bacon. Our guarantee is to charge extra for the same or lesser product!  :-+

General comment about the metal case:
When I build similar circuitry, I try to fit the "guts" on the panel, to minimize the wiring, as well as using a fifth banana jack or small binding post for the case connection (as mentioned above).
This allows the use of heavy solid Cu wire, with a slight bend for strain relief, between the posts and the device.
