100 Projects for Bluetooth Low Energy with PSoC 4 BLE
« on: February 13, 2015, 07:18:42 pm »
Hello EEVBlog community!

A few months ago, we posted here to announce the new PSoC 4 BLE device from Cypress: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/microcontrollers/psoc-4-ble-one-chip-solution-for-the-iot/

We're running a campaign where we post a new example project with BLE everyday, for a total for 100 projects.

If you're interested in learning how to develop BLE applications, you may find some of these projects useful. We're going to feature everything from simple BLE locator tags, to Hear Rate Monitors, CapSense touch-sensing over BLE, motor control, and more!

We're running the 100 projects in 100 days blog here: http://www.cypress.com/?id=5509

All the projects will be posted in GitHub here: https://github.com/cypresssemiconductorco/PSoC-4-BLE

To learn more about the BLE Pioneer Kit: http://www.cypress.com/?rid=77780

Great timing... I just did the PSoC4 BLE training day yesterday and I was pleasantly surprised to see several dozen people there and only a few had prior PSoC experience.

A couple of things the presenter hit on that many people may not know is that the PSoC BLE device runs @ 48Mhz and has around 64k of flash free - and there is a 256k flash version coming also - which gives you pretty significant available resources to develop applications on the same chip you use for your BLE connection.

The other thing to keep in mind are the low power states.  You can put the MCU into stop mode and get power consumption down to 60nA and wake on a pin, and get to 150nA with RAM retention in hibernate.  You can also run them @ 1.8V and the antenna matching needs only 2 components.

I have been excited by the PSoC BLE chip for a while now. Most of the other BLE devices have limitations that I don't like (e.g. TI requires the IAR compiler). While it has been announced for a while, I don't see any of the chips available from the major suppliers. DigiKey indicates that it is behind schedule. Is there any information on when they will be available for purchase?

Nice, I go to the 100 project in 100 days for the pioneer often.

But I'm more interested in the PRoC BLE remote dev kit, the reason is the miniprog3 that comes with it. Is it available yet?
on the webpage it still has the contact sales to order one.

I might still get the PSoC 4 BLE dev kit with the built in programmer (I have 2 pioneers and a bunch of PSoC4 chips and protoboards)

BTW a prototype PSoC4 BLE similar to the 4200 ones at $4 would be cool! and also a PRoC BLE prototype board similar to the 4100 one for $4 as well.

My understanding is that they have plans to make the modules they ship with the BLE kit available for purchase. They didn't mention pricing or availability but that would make it similar to the $4 prototyping kit. I don't know about being boot-loadable though so it still may need a MiniProg.

Yes, the PSoC4 BLE and PRoC4 BLE modules will be available separately as independent products.  They are perhaps around 5cm x 3cm and expose all the GPIO pins of the device.  They are also coming out with a mini version which, IIRC, is supposed to be more like 15mm x 15mm and will have the same chip, but not all GPIO's are broken out due to the smaller size.

And in regards to availability, this question was asked and one of the guys at the meeting (who was in a strong position to know) said that availability was a few weeks out and that they will start coming out of the factory in about 2 weeks and arriving to distributors shortly after.
