Direct GPIO mapping between SPP-C/HC-05 Bluetooth pairs

Has anyone successfully taken a pair of those cheap SPP-C Bluetooth modules, configured one as a master and the other as a slave, and then reflect state changes in the master's GPIO pins as state changes in the slave's corresponding pins? All this with both Bluetooth modules operating stand-alone without microcontrollers - other than, of course, initially configuring each via respective connections to a serial terminal.

Any help would be appreciated ...
