Read the line after that number, the one that says "Z80 CPU", it should give you a clue as to what it is.  ;)

The 8 at the end of the number you posted designates speed (8MHz)

Ignore all that, I missed the 6, it's a Z8 CPU.

The Z084 is a lot more common... what's the datecode on this one?

Yeah, I missed the 6 in the part number, it's a Z8 CPU, not a Z80...  OOoops!

Two other sets of numbers on chip.  73979-1 and 9237. Most definitely not a z80, way too small, only 28 pins.
Had a feeling it might be  a z8, but can't find any info on it anywhere.

Not much info on the net about it (but now it's all in one place  ;D)

Here's some brief specifications:
http://www.datasheetarchive.com/shortform-datasheet/Z08600-08PEC.html

It seems it was also known as the "Z8 MP/3/7088 MODEL 7000 R255"
http://pdf.datasheetarchive.com/indexerfiles/Datasheets-XX1/DSAXX0078.pdf
http://cpufpu.ic.cz/zilog/z8.html

The 2K ROM makes it pretty much useless as far as reprogramming goes.

Thanks Crazy Ape, now I can toss it with a clear conscience. Hate to throw away usable parts.

Unlike the mask-ROM 8051s which could still be used with external ROM by disabling the internal one.
