Along with the integrated on-board debuggers on TI's dev kits, this is one of the few external debuggers that work on your own board designs with the free version of TI's Code Composer Studio IDE. There is also a V3 of this tool.

If you haven't found it already, the best source of information on anything TI microcontroller related is http://forum.43oh.com/

Oh Crap, I spoke to soon. I took the thing apart before turning it on (noticed a FTDI serial front end with a Spartan CPLD) the FTDI driver on windows just bricked the dam thing... I will have to use Mprog and revert to the original VID as recommended here.

Im thinking of just ripping out an original FTDI chip from an unused c2000 piccolo board and "transplanting" its FTDI chip to the programmer.

I used this JTAG debugger on C2000 and it has decent performance for C2000 devices (as well as for Cortex M3/M4s). It is pretty slow for more complex devices (Sitara, ARM9s, C6000 DSPs).

A good reference is here:

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...
