That's the fun part

Q: How do I generate a free license for XDS100, simulator or EVM/DSK use?
In CCS go to the help->Licensing options menu and click the button to "Use free limited license". This will open a browser with the following link. https://focus-webapps.ti.com/licreg/productactivation.tsp?toPerform=firstTimeActivation&orderablePartNumber=TMDSCCS-HWN01A&FNOPartNumber=TMDSCCS-HWN01A-v4.0

How does CCS compare with other development environments and compilers for ARM Cortex such as Embitz/Emblocks with GCC? Does it provide any help in configuring pinmuxes and peripherals like ST's CubeMX? Would there be any benefit from learning yet another IDE?

If you order today (11th September 2016) and probably tomorrow, TI ships for free.

I resisted and resisted, until this.  Verified.  Bought.

I was having second thoughts too. But, $10 with free shipping is deal of dreams for someone working on TI products. I bought 2.

All I know about C is how to spell it, but I, too, could not resist this great temptation and just ordered it. Shipping was still free, too.

Thanks to the OP for alerting us to this deal!

Is this limited to certain regions?

Mine comes up as $464 and change at checkout.

I'll not be ordering one unfortunately.

Yes. Shopping cart will add the individual line items at full price if you happen to logout and login after you added the promo bundle. Here is the screen shot how it looks like.

Received the launchpad today.  Pleasantly surprised to see an extra MSP430 chip included.

Also included is a 32kHz "microcrystal".  Anyone know what the purpose of that is?

With the free shipping deal, I couldn't help myself and ordered a second one.

FWIW - both times I also had the above discussed extra items in my cart bug.

The crystal can optionally be soldered to the board for use.

The crystal is intended to be part of on chip RTC. If you need it, connect it to P2.6 and P2.7. Pads are on board, on the right side.

Ah, ok, I see that. Thanks.

But why not have it already installed?

Because it is entirely optional and you may wish to use those pins as GPIO.

Ah, looking through the documentation now, I see the discussion and rational for the ability to install different oscillators for very low power apps, etc. - (Chapter 5 of the MSP430x2xx user's guide)

This is not something I've seen on the other TI launchpads I have, for example my F5529 MSP430 launchpad.

I don't know. I wondered that too. As far as I found it frees up a couple of i/o pins if you don't need a crystal. Also you may require a higher frequency crystal  if ultra-low power operation is not required.

I found this link which dicsusses crystals in detail. http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slaa322c/slaa322c.pdf

I do not think G2553 supports external HFOSC.

F5529 is many magnitudes more power than G2553. I have been working on it the last semester helping my neighbor on his term project assignments. It turns out not only him, but also many other junior students have quite some problems in programming. Only a few of them know how a mutex or semaphore works, or why we need double buffer in some cases. None of them knows how to write a simple parser to process UART data without sscanf. Some even do not know you need \0 to terminate a string, and therefore printf triggers all sorts of weird things |O.
