I had a working version of the TL866ii+ and fell into the trap of updating the firmware. From there I managed to delete the bootloader because I did not research the problem properly. I don't think it is a genuine model. The microcontroller is a PIC24FJ256GB110 and I loaded a Mikroelectronics example hex bootloader which the laptop picks up as unknown device, this is because I cannot edit the PID and VID as I don't have MikroeC   :( . I have tried Mplab X ide but it gets very complex with lots of errors. I think the original hex file is encrypted but I'm hoping some one might be able to help.

I thought that I could just get a copy of the bootloader and then use the manufacturer's software to update the firmware. However there seems to be much more going on in the background of the 'simple' bootloader. Also there is the little problem of the serial number. I will look through the links you kindly included and see if I can glean more information and look if there is anything on the Internet. It's interesting stuff, I've learnt a bit and I'm not afraid to download files to a device that is already non functional but not broken.
