I dont have a mac but in the pc version you must match the com port to the device at least once,
click the red box then match "device library" to the com port (green box) , shown here is a fdti cable match to the espdev and where i move that cable too the (eg switch usb ports) it follows even though there is no esp connected to that cable, same goes with ch serial based devices. Please note that in the arduino flashing tool they added com port search option too so even if you select the wrong com port in the ide it can sometime auto find the device leaving you assuming the system config is correct.
i use many ESP's under platformio (personal choice) but i have found that when i am under arduino ide i have to ensure the ide knows the device connected when it's a new device. Sometimes i also have to manually change the device as it see's a serial cable as a esp because they share the same PID/VID so you may have too as well.
