Is ST planning to make a Cortex M85 based MCU?
« on: January 21, 2025, 02:08:32 am »
The new 'N6 is based on M55, which has much lower DMIPS/MHz and CoreMark/MHz than the M7, so it's a downgrade from the STM32H7 for me. I'm after simple raw DSP performance. Don't care about any of the AI stuff... The M85 core should be an upgrade, if they don't try to use some ultra small geometry with heaps of leakage current.

Good question. My guess is that they probably will, as they seem to have switched to the ARMv8.x-M cores for their newer products (M33, M55...) at least for their mid-range lines.
So I would suspect that they will release something that will be in the same league, but outperform the M7. I just have no clue when. I haven't heard of leaked information about that so far.

My position as an engineer for the last decade has afforded me the ability to meet with vendor marketing and FAE reps over the years for companies like ST, NXP, etc.. I met with them recently (last 6 months or so). One of the cool things that you usually meet for is MCU roadmaps.

Let's just say you may be seeing some very interesting chips coming from ST in the next few years. ST is the only vendor with a good track record of releasing new chips (regardless of class) at least once a year. You can't say that about the other vendors. NXP, for example, is a complete joke. You also may be seeing another vendor come out of the woodwork for some nice cortex M offerings in terms of industrial connectivity & motor control. That's the area I am interested in at the moment.
