« on: December 30, 2013, 06:52:09 pm »
I have a repair in on a monitor but I have not seen an LCD do this before and was wondering if anyone would know what caused this.

Pic Attached.

Cheers

I have seen this before. But I'm not smart enough to know what happened. :/

Delamination of the internal layers allowing the liquid crystal to spill from its chambers. This can be caused by one or more of the following: impact, temperature extremes, uv exposure (breaking down the adhesive) or , in the case of cheap ones, age.

My daughter (when she was really young) poked her laptop's lcd screen hard by mistake it shows pretty colors under pressure.  She then tried to poke it harder and harder intentionally just to look at the pretty colors.  Eventually it turned into rainbow color like the picture you shown and at that point the screen was kaput.

Your LCD looks like it was under some mechanical stress - dropped, sat on, ran over by truck, whatever...

(She learned her lesson -  Daddy gave her a hard time for not thinking...  She still repeats it these days: "Before action, first come thought...")

On the IT side we call that a cracked LCD. Not always a crack in the glass, but a stress fracture inside the LCD. (Going by the lines radiating within the rainbow)

Just heat by itself can cause the rainbow, but with the cracks, I say it got a bit too much pressure.

Hi,

Twisting of the entire LCD due to bad mounting can also cause this. Might be fine for a while then suddenly fail.......

Looks like it has been used for mammography.

:-DD

Here's the effect responsible for the colours; the polarisers are there already since it's an LCD.

As others have said. I think it's a temperature thing. I lived in the desert for a stint, and I saw lots of LCDs die this way after being left inside the car in the summer. Meters, testers, even some old laptop screens.

Thanks all I replaced it today and it was stressed, its in a cnc milled enclosure that's too tight and the top corners of the display needed rounding off quite a bit :)

Hmmm....  that would entirely depend on the patient, wouldn't you think?  I can imagine, with the right patient, being used for mammography could be a rather stimulating experience rather than a stressful one.
