Title: looking for a tiny LCD
Post by: legacy on July 04, 2016, 03:36:37 pm
constraints:

acceptable features:
I'd like to deal with a pure pixel-driven lcd
say 96x64..128x64 pixel is ok
SPI, or parallel interface (8-bit 6800-type parallel interface? z80-type? they are both ok)
passive LCD please (it needs to be power supplied by tiny battery)
backlight-option is not requested
3.3V or 5V
hobby purpose -> no production quality requested, large availability is not requested

do you have any tips for me?
I am going to design a very tiny portable engine  :D

The only thing that I know of that comes close to your requirements is the Transistor tester LCD, but the view area is bit smaller than what you need:
View Area : 55x30
Size: 65mm x 40mm
5mW Power

mmm, most of those LCDs seem equal to LCDs offered by Adafruit and seedstudio
definitively too big or too small, for my application

also, the thickness has a constraint: no more than 4mm

but this (https://world.taobao.com/item/520410923392.htm?spm=a312a.7728556.2015080705.16.07wRwP&id=520410923392&scm=1007.12006.12548.i527881874905&pvid=5a11460a-059b-451c-982f-47a26fd35ce5) LCD is interesting, it's 66x38mm, 192x96 pixel, very  thick  :D

yes, it's not a piece of cake to find out the proper LCD, ironically LCDs with a built-in Toshiba T6K04 driver happen to be perfect for my needs, unfortunately they are a customization by TI  :palm: :palm: :palm:

The thickness is obviously due to the backlight assembly that you can probably remove.

Have a look at this EU based range of lcds.

I have ordered from 'artronic' a few times via ebay.  Ended up using some of their displays in a batch of 10 units, never had any issues with quality.  Using both the transflective, and transmissive - the transflective one being the one you're after.

http://www.artronic.com.pl/o_produkcie.php?id=1143? (http://www.artronic.com.pl/o_produkcie.php?id=1143?)

Glass is ~3mm thick, pins are 0.1" grid, view area is 60x33, dimensions 48.5x68.  I cannot say much about their customer service, never had to deal with it, but at the time I was stunned by the price, about £6 a unit, and that included adding the backlight to the cost.

Not LCD, but the OLED displays from Adafruit are very nice wiith a SPI interface.  I have the 1.27" 128x96 pixel display and really like it.
The 1.27" 128x96 OLED (https://www.adafruit.com/products/1673) or the 1.5" 128x128 OLED (https://www.adafruit.com/products/1431).

I wrote my own library for them to reduce program memory, but the Adafruit is okay if you're not limited for memory.

Those are ridiculously overpriced... as in 10x more. Even if you mount them on a PCB and add some extra sub-$1 components they should still be <$10. Look here for example:

http://www.buydisplay.com/default/oled-display (http://www.buydisplay.com/default/oled-display)

OP may also try looking around on that site, others here have reported good success buying from them.

I agree for the RAW displays you linked.  But, that's not what you're paying for.  The Adafruit breakboards generate the proper voltages (from 5VDC) and level shifting of signal lines (for TTL signals) and a MicroSD slot for extra memory.  They are a little pricey; but they are plug and play.

I second the ones from electronic assembly (lcd-module.com). The DOG serie. They are thin, have something in the size you want, and they work. There are datasheets. I use the 132x32 and 160x104 versions. They need a few capacitors and have serial interface. And backlight  options are available, but you may push the dept beyond your stated 4 mm.

Use OLED display 128*64 with 0.96" dimension

Use OLED display 128*64 with 0.96" dimension

OP requires very low power, powered from a small battery so OLED probably not a good choice.
