Microchip parametric search is dead
« on: October 20, 2021, 02:44:07 am »
Seems like Microchip has lost interest in having any customers. They killed off their parametric search function. FOR EVERY PRODUCT IN THE ENTIRE COMPANY.

Yes this is a rage post.  |O |O |O |O

Microchip's website has always been... dubious. It always has loaded very very slowly, it always had a strange, mazelike heirarchy of webpages. Overall it has always seemed very poorly administrated.

BUT - it was always possible to search through their products to find what you want. No more.

I work in a university lab and often use PICs to build little pieces of hardware for use in experiments. This often means I need a particular arrangement of peripherals that only a few PICs can support. Now that the parametric search is gone, I won't be able to use PICs anymore. I'm forced to switch to another company, probably some sort of ARM chips. And once I put in the effort to switch, I won't ever come back.

I filed support tickets with Microchip over a month ago over this issue and got no response. Radio silence.

Strange how a billion dollar company with so many geniuses employed can still make such a fundamental, business-ruining mistake. Like even my local restaurants have good, functional websites. Yet Microchip, a leading electronics company seems incapable of the same.

Don't point me towards MAPS. It is buggy, slow, out of date, and overall useless. It is not a viable search function.

Anyway, thanks for reading. I've been fuming about this for a while now. Have a nice day.

It's all still there.

Yeah, it's NOT still there.

Take a closer look. You can't actually search anything. It's just a list. There's no way to filter.

Nevermind. Jesus... they made the filters into a hidden dropdown menu and I've never spotted in over a month.

I still think it's shit design though.

It's the radio silence that is bothering me in this story. It reminds me of stories for soviet state-owned companies that produced garbage and cared 0% about customer satisfaction and feedback.

And yeah, I switched to STM32 few years ago. Must say I am satisfied, although there is a new rising star on the horizon - FPGA's with soft CPUs  >:D

Doesn't work at all. Choosing "all 8-bit MCUs" gives out "Radiation Tolerant Analog Mixed IC Products" instead and then mysterious "404 – No records found for the requested chart".

Some other categories do work, some give randomly wrong content instead. For example, clicking "All microcontollers" gives "dsPIC33C Products" and again, 404 error.

When the list loads properly, then the filters (that are hidden for no reason) start to work as well.

Horrible totally unusable and broken beyond imagination **** but isn't almost every information system and website this today? You are lucky if anything works at all.

This kind of customer service would have killed a business in the past, but today customer service is crap everywhere so it doesn't matter anymore. This is the new normal, as is not receiving any reply.

Microchips and the likes should be very thankful for the existence of this forum.  I hope they put ads here to support this financially - with money they could have lost by frustrated customers, or money they would have spend to properly handle more support.

What they should really do, is hire the same website guys EEVBlog uses, and fire the current pile of idiots.

I mean running a website that is effectively serving formatted Excel spreadsheets, really is not rocket science. How does MCP screw it up so thoroughly?!

I don't think publicly referring to them as a bunch of idiots is going to further your cause.
There's no point getting old if you don't have stories.

I suspect modern web design tools are a part of the problem...  bloat and slowness abounds...

Just saw their new webshite. What were they thinking? Why is this alienation of your customers the new trend with all semiconductor manufacturer?
So apparently, the good search tools are under https://www.microchipdirect.com

I wish it was only semiconductor manufacturers.  Since covid everyone is doing it. There is a crowd not too far from me that sell nuts and bolts, have a bunch of guys employed mozying around the place doing not a whole lot and they recently changed so they refuse to serve people who just walk in and now you need a minimum spend of €10,000 per year before they'll look at you. Banks getting rid of all their cashiers so you have to use their robot overlords. Websites everywhere are filled with bloat and tracking scripts but try to hide the information you're after

Tried not so long ago to get a list of PIC32 with ethernet, I just had to give up in the end

Yes, apparently! :-DD

One of the best ways of screwing up a perfectly working web site or piece of software is to hand it to a bunch of software developers for some overhaul. :-DD

Stumbled across this thread by chance as I have recently been struggling with the site as well.
I also had this 404 error, obviously there has been no improvement for 3 months.
Very sad...

What are people doing wrong?

1) Go to parametric search. https://www.microchip.com/en-us/parametric-search/chartno_627
2) Select 'All' for the Product View Mode
3) Select 'All Specification' for the Chart View Mode
4) Hit 'Download Chart'
5) Open resulting spreadsheet in your favourite spreadsheet.
6) Filter/Search/Cut/Paste to your hearts content.

I always use MAPS:

https://www.microchip.com/maps/main.aspx

Is anything not available in MAPS that you search otherwise?
