If you are comfortable with arduino IDE, i'd suggest you start off with energia.

It is a wiring/processing fork for msp430.

it has built in libraries for the launchpad, even the stellaris version and the IDE comes with example sketches.

It should get you started pretty easily though...

Energia is excellent if you're already au fait with Arduino. If you want to learn native programming for it, have a look through the TI tutorials, meant to be taught as a one day course,

Thank you i have energia and i already started learning but i was not sure if the commands were same as the Arduino IDE ones because i have an arduino on the road it would be nice if i had the basics understood with the launchpad thank you.

Well,

If you went through the examples of energia, you ll notice that they are exactly the same as arduino examples.

The only difference is in the base level libraries..

You can copy-paste examples(mostly, but dont quote me on that) from arudino into energia  and it will still compile.

Forget the Launchpad... get a FET430UIF for $100 (tax and shipping included) directly from TI, and some (any) MSP430 IC's for $0.50 to $2.00 each (or even free samples from TI) and you're ready to go. Bootloaders sucks, and you have much more freedom this way as to what chip to use and even what IDE. Plus it's cheaper in the long run.

The Launchpad doesn't use a bootloader. It has an ez430 FET that can program any MSP430 that uses SpyByWire. The MSP-FET430UIF is only needed for older chips that have only JTAG and to enable code protection.

I'm doing the exact opposite (kinda)... bought a boarduino (adafruit dot com) and next month getting an msp430, so Ill be working with an arduino and then the msp.  Its good to keep your options open like Dave says.

Don't use Energia, start here instead - http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MSP430_LaunchPad_(MSP-EXP430G2)
