STM32 DAC slew rate
« on: January 04, 2017, 07:03:02 am »
I have a rather simple problem that I can't seem to find an easy answer to. I am using an STM32F767ZI microcontroller DAC to output a square wave and I'm finding that the slew rate of the DAC going from 0V (0x000) to 3.3 V (0xFFF) is around 2.2us. This seems to be slower than expected. I have tried looking through the Datasheet but cannot seem to find slew rates for the DAC (although I might have missed it since it is 1896 pages long). Is this sort of slew rate normal? Is there something in code that can change the speed? Where abouts can I find information about this in the datasheet?

Many thanks

Do you have the DAC output buffer enabled?

What capacitive load do you have on the pin?

The document you're looking at is not the datasheet, but the reference manual.
STM32 MCUs usually come with three manuals: reference, programmer, and datasheet.
Electrical characteristics are in the datasheet:
http://www.st.com/resource/en/data_brief/stm32f767bi.pdf
For the DAC settling time, see page 177 tSETTLING: typical is 3us, max 6us.

Thanks for the clarification, the typical settling time of 3us seems consistent with my scope readings so no surprises there. Answered my questions in one go, many thanks  :-+.

The DAC output never reaches from AREF- to AREF+ really (do not expect 0x001 to be 0.7mV  and 0xFFE to be 3.2993V). Second thing is that DAC output resistance is around 15k. There is an option to connect a voltage follower with decreased output resistance of around 3 ohms and limited bandwidth but that adds some offset and nonlinearity near -AREF and +AREF.
You should read the application note from ST called "Extending the DAC performance of STM32 microcontrollers".
