STM32WB: Can't flash chip
« on: December 11, 2019, 09:30:58 am »
Hi guys,

I created my first real PCB with an stm32wb55RGV6. The problem is, I can't flash the chip.

I connected my board to a stm32F407G-disco on the SWD (with correctly set pinouts of the st-link ) or with a ST-LinkV2 device but nothing is happening here....

The Windows software doesn't detect the stm32.

Can someone help me ? I join schematics and few pictures.

Best regards !
Michael

BOOT0 and BOOT1 pins maybe?

hm.. I'm not actually sure if SWD uses the built-in bootloader or some other method to program the chip.

In my experience with STM32F1 chips, the BOOT0/BOOT1, the flash tool will see the device, but report a flash size of 0. (But this was on the Linux tool qstlink)

1. Double-check your voltages, if NRST is high etc..
2. Try switching it into a bootloader mode via BOOT0 pin that will guarantee that those SWD pins are in a right configuration. And you can try to program it via UART to see if MCU is even running.

STM32WB has just Boot0, no Boot1 and it set to VCC pull-up 10k (with jumper).

@kamtar, voltages is ok, I was just not solder all pin for BLE power, I check all ground and VCC. Nrst is high too.

I try to see UART like you advise.

no, I can't join it event in UART.

I think the position of chip is OK (because microscope...).

Any ideas?

0. wire the stlink programmer properly
1. press the board's reset button down and hold it pressed
2. click Connect in the stlink utility
3. release the reset button
4. it should recognize the chip (provided it is supported by the stlink utility).
Readers discretion is advised..

You do this to get it working when MCU is constantly resetting or when SWD pins are configured as something else. He said he is trying to program it when he is in a bootloader mode so that shouldn't be an issue.

@kamtar true, but I try this method too without success.

I read again the documentation offer by stm to set minimal bom with stm32WB (https://www.st.com/content/ccc/resource/technical/document/application_note/group1/cf/9d/5e/38/d2/83/4e/91/DM00600032/files/DM00600032.pdf/jcr:content/translations/en.DM00600032.pdf) and I see this schematics (cf doc join). I'm not connect VLXSMPS and VFBSMPS (floating pin in my board), but on schematic, they plug it to VCC. I try it but I'm not sure that can resolve my pb...

refer to the datasheet and look at operating conditions. There you will find if it can operate without voltage on those pins.

Ok I'm based my schematics on a documentation that seems to be wrong (https://www.st.com/content/ccc/resource/technical/document/application_note/group1/cf/9d/5e/38/d2/83/4e/91/DM00600032/files/DM00600032.pdf/jcr:content/translations/en.DM00600032.pdf).

The power rails are not configured as requested in the main documentation. I had not checked the values of the capacitors before validating my schematic and apparently I have 3 modifications to make. I could do it on the current pcb version without any problem. I'll test it this weekend and let you know again if it works better.

After that it's possible that I also short-circuited my stm32..... but I don't really know how to test it. I have one left in reserve, I will try to change it if ever the modification of the capacitors is not enough to start the system.

Then... Was it possible to detect the device using SWD with these PIN VOLTAGES connections? Because datasheet indicates two scenarios voltages less than 3V or around 2V..

What software are you using to connect to the ST-Link?
Does the software you are using support the STM32WB?

Are you aware you are replying to a thread that is a year old?
