STM32C0 pricing?
« on: August 14, 2023, 07:37:59 pm »
I'm pretty new here, so I apologize if this question is out of scope here.
Do you guys have an idea of how the new STM32C0 line's bulk pricing (let's say 50k pcs of the C031 base memory part) should be like? We're long time Microchip customers interested in switching out, and the product literature says it's an 8-bit killer. We don't have a relationship with ST at all but I was curious to know where the pricing for this line would fall. ST's own store is no good indication, and prices there are at par with G0 which seems kinda senseless. LCSC doesn't seem to have these yet, I usually get a decent idea from there.

So anyone who has any knowledge of this from having bought these - I'd be grateful to get an idea. Doesn't have to be exact quotations. I know pricing is sensitive info, so my messages are open as well.
Also - are these actually out in good quantities now?
Cheers.

They do. https://www.lcsc.com/product-detail/Microcontroller-Units-MCUs-MPUs-SOCs_STMicroelectronics-STM32C031F6P6_C5456225.html
Of course for 50k+, you'll need to ask for a quote.

> ST's own store is no good indication,

Do you mean the 10k price on the product's page, or ST's "sample shop" which is in fact Mouser with Mouser prices?

> and prices there are at par with G0 which seems kinda senseless

The 'C0 line is designed mainly to replace the STM8, but they as they have more features, ST will probably try to sell them at higher price, although it's always questionable what's equivalent set of features and what is fair price. I would be surprised if 50k would push the prices down significantly as compared to the 10k quoted price, but there may be "local and transient minima".

From my garage-scale point of view, the 'C0 line is meh.

We discussed in the C0 thread: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/microcontrollers/stm32c0-series/msg4636288/#msg4636288
The pricing available to small time players was not enticing at all. You can get F0's or G0's for less.

Just some marketing angle they came up with.

Marketing guys make all sorts of claims.
'8-bit killers' have come, ... and gone....

It's strange they imagine they can replace even their own 8-bit parts, which currently manage 2.95V~5.5V, with a narrow supply part.
Other vendors already offer TSSOP-20 parts in 1.7V~5.5V

Yes, this is what mystifies me about the STM32C0. It's not even a suitable replacement for their own STM8 range. Not only does it not run on 5V, but they don't have a compatible pin-out either. For example, the TSSOP20 or UFQFPN20 packages don't have a pin-out even remotely resembling popular STM8 parts like the STM8S003.

They've been told to the point of exasperation to make stuff with drop-in pin out and voltage compatibility. I've concluded their sales and marketing are brain damaged, and their design group is just inflexible to any suggestion that they step out of their comfort zone and think about what it's will actually take to replace or kill the 8-bit micro..
Any vendor with any nimble thinkers would surely understand that you take market share by replicating parts that sell by the shed-load with a part that takes zero effort, or less, to replace on the board.
And for the STM8 you'd not even get blow-back from the offended vendor, although perhaps I underestimate ST to cause itself problems..

They made it compatible with the G0, well, more like just left the G0 design as is. Which is similar but different from the F0.

Octopart lists them between USD 90ct and USD1.3 in 10k+ depending on the exact type number:

https://octopart.com/search?q=STM32C031

Octopart does not list LCSC and/or "typical" Chinese IC's, while prices at LCSC can be half or less that of "comparable" parts.
