UC1601S T151/T154a display controller replacement for SG–642 sine generator

. . .I asked about replacing the obsolete T151 module Member Liv used in his projects, so after looking around on eBay, Ali, Banggood, etc., I decided on one of these parallel 12864 modules plus
an I²C adapter PCB to save having to redesign the front PCB:–

Can anyone summarise the steps I need to carry out to replace the UC1601S code in Liv's SG–642 firmware with code to drive the replacement display's ST7920 please?

What compiler do I require – there are "c" and "h" files in Liv's Code?

Liv used two ATMega microcontrollers, one × 'Mega88 and 1 × 'Mega324.

Are the U8G8 libraries suitable for this project?

My apologies for asking what might be simple daft questions, but my skills are on circuit design and repair, rather than firmware, and all my essays in firmware have all ended in unfathomable error messages, or LCD modules that remain obstinately blank or all black blocks!!
