STM32MP1 - ST's Applications Processor
« on: August 06, 2019, 08:13:47 pm »
Couldn't find anything on search, so here goes.
I'm looking for a CPU capable of running ye olde Linux for a new project, and while trying to figure out EOL of some of the ones I have devkits of, I stumbled upon this:

https://www.st.com/en/microcontrollers-microprocessors/stm32mp1-series.html

Copypasta from the sales blurb:
Dual Cortex®-A7 cores running at 650 MHz
32-Kbyte L1 Instruction cache
32-Kbyte L1 Data cache
256-Kbyte Level 2 cache
Cortex®-M4 core running at 209 MHz
a single-precision floating point unit (FPU)
a full set of digital signal processor (DSP) instructions
memory protection unit for enhanced application security

Now its cheap, real cheap, and covers everything that I need. My issues are that I assume support will be highly limited, and a cursory look at the errata shows that it has some issues identified already. This will be my own self-designed Linux system, so I don't really feel like being a beta-tester. What are the thoughts on using a brand new SoC?

The other contenders are the AM3352 and the i.MX6UL. The TI part I am worried about EOL, as its 8 years old, and the Freescale I have zero experience with.

Yeah the part is really new (it was officially released at this year's embedded world) but ST is doing a number of classes and workshops around europe to promote the part.
I was actually tempted to go to one

I would call up TI and see if they can give a guarantee of the lifecycle for AM3352. I can't find any details on their site.
Olimex still using it relatively recently: https://olimex.wordpress.com/tag/am3352/
This module was introduced in late 2018 as well: https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/critical-link/mitysom-335x-arm-cortex-a8

Quote
Up to 1-GHz Sitara™ ARM®Cortex®-A8
32KB of L1 Instruction
256KB of L2 Cache (ECC)
176KB of On-ChipBootROM
mDDR(LPDDR),DDR2,DDR3,DDR3LController:– mDDR:200-MHzClock(400-MHzDataRate)– DDR2:266-MHzClock(532-MHzDataRate)– DDR3:400-MHzClock(800-MHzDataRate)– DDR3L:400-MHzClock(800-MHzD
2000 MIPS
-40 to 105 C

Would the speed be much different? I'm thinking either if you need dual core, or if there is a specific peripheral it would sway you one way or the other.

Seems to be TIs next release: https://www.ti.com/processors/sitara-arm/am6x-cortex-a53-r5/overview.html

i.MX6UL if you need the graphics with acceleration & layers, then you MUST use the old kernel provided by NXP. As all others, that are providing SOMs use the upstream kernel.

The workshops i mentioned
Still tempted to go (i have to ask the boss, as it's something that will probably never need, it would be for my own sake)

Thanks for that. I should see if I can get myself to one of those as well.
