Who would use Renesas F5210 / RX210 MCU?

I am looking at a US designed avionics product which has one of these, just running several SPI devices and outputting one SPI data stream. It is a very undemanding application, and this chip seems an overkill. Is it MIL qualified or some such?

The data sheet mentions IEC60730 compliance.

I see it is over 10 years old, and is tagged NRND now.
It looks like a new design alternative may be: RX231 Active Product Longevity: 2039

It is common for designs to use 'overkill' these days, powerful MCUs are available for very low prices.
The selection may be based on what they are used to using. ie another product may use the same part.
