Title: -FOUND- JTAG programmer for MSP430
Post by: TheSteve on November 05, 2018, 12:45:14 am
I'm looking for a JTAG programmer for an MSP430. I would buy a new one but this is likely a one time use type thing.

If you have something please let me know. Shipping to US or Canada.

How about a MSP-FET430UIF? I don't think it's JTAG, but it worked with TI's Code Composer Studio the last time I worked on MSP430 (years ago). I've got a V1.4A.

Free, if you want it. You could paypal me postage afterwards.

Buy a launch pad,  take the jumpers and you are done

I have been reading datasheets. The launchpad looks great but from a really quick check might only support the 2 wire debug interface. The 430 I want to look at is old enough I think it only has the 4 wire jtag interface. In the datasheet one of the recommended programmers is the MSP-FET430UIF that AndyTurk mentioned.

It might be helpful to say which MSP430 part you're looking at.  I use the G2 Launchpad to flash the MSP430G2xxx parts using 2-wire JTAG.  That works with the chip installed on the Launchpad, or in-circuit with jumpers.  But I don't know if that Launchpad would work with your part.

But the least expensive option for one-time use might be to flash using BSL.  You would use either BSLDEMO or BSL-Scripter software, depending on how old your part is, and a jellybean USB-to-UART adapter module like the CP2102, FT232, or CH340 as the interface.  TI doesn't support those interfaces, so you would need some software mods and instructions, which are available from me. Of course that assumes your chip has BSL.  Not all of the early ones do, but slau319t.pdf would tell you if yours does, and if so, what software it requires.

I've taken AndyTurk up on his generous offer. The datasheet for the chip I'm using specifically mentions the programmer he is offering.
thank you all!
