Tracking people using 802.11 probe requests has been well known for some time, so long in fact that many major manufacturers of mobile devices no longer transmit probe requests and rather wait for the Wi-Fi access point to transmit its beacon.

It also relies on accurate Wi-Fi access point location information to be made available on sites like WiGLE.

In my experience, locating people using just probe requests is very hit-and-miss. If you're concerned about this, my recommendation to use a "generic" Wi-Fi access point name for your home Wi-Fi such as "Home". According to WiGLE the most common SSID names (worldwide) are:

1. xfinitywifi
2. linksys
3. BTWiFi-with-FON
4. <no SSID>
5. BTWifi-X
6. XFINITY
7. UPC Wi-Free
8. AndroidAP
9. Ziggo
10. NETGEAR

I suspect many of these are based on local service providers in the US, so probably not a great idea to use them in other countries.

Yes it's well know of course,but i did these apps for more details.
Wigle was not enough accurate for this project,i used another private database for this.

Also i was looking for a mobile solution,so you don't have to stay at home to track probe requests,but you can track them anywhere.

At this time many mobile manufacturers still sending probe requests of what i saw.. but they can also send random probe requests to avoid tracking.

Some years ago I made a concept system. It was using several wifi devices, in promiscuous mode, listening to traffic. The system had a dozen nodes, placed in a grid, reporting RSSI values. It was able to do tracking of people down to 1-2m accuracy. So if they put it in a shop, together with cameras, and recipes, they would get very accurate information about your shopping habits. How much time you spent thinking which chips to buy. Did you go for your favourite beer right away, or did you stop to look for alternatives.

With the new remotely update-able price tags they can increase the price of everything after 18:00, when all the busy, working people shop, and reduce it at 10:00 when all the retirees are buying. It was discussed to place BLE beacons into each shopping cart as well.

I love the "grid" concept. :)
It could open the way to many investigations....for sure our devices are constantly sending informations without our knowledge.

I'll post later another concept about wifi(scanner,sniffer,custom captive portal,honeypot) and all this in a single tiny module.
