Proxy FTTP
« on: November 03, 2020, 04:54:54 pm »
I just got FTTP.

All my machines connected OK except the old laptop running Win8.1Pro.

It looks like it connects to the router (wifi) but has no Internet.

The troubleshooter says that it can't automatically find the proxy settings and/or that it can't find the default gateway.

Any help/pointers gratefully received.

Cheers.

I am sure you have checked the usual stuff but have you by any chance assigned a static GW/IP on this laptop at some point? Make them all automatic and see if that helps.

Cheers. How do I do that?

I did setup the connection manually - could that be the problem?

I do not use Win 8 versions. But just Google and you should be able to find the steps to follow. It should not be very different from other versions of Windows.

Okay. I have tried every single thing that Google could provide: I’ve installed and uninstalled everything, run loads of scripts, checked all the settings are automatic, you name it!
The laptop is connected to the Wi-Fi router as I can see it on other devices. However, it still will not connect to the Internet giving that proxy error.

Any further advice would be most welcome, thank you.

Well, As far as I can tell, there are multiple things that can screw up the network parameters/settings.

I found this from Microsoft: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-networking/windows-81-proxy-settings-keeps-resetting/3e41dded-6ed3-4883-a7f4-8af538a45d34

It may work for you.

Nothing worked then I remembered that I had an old wifi dongle so I installed that and I’m back online!

Thank you very much for sticking with me - I gave up in the end!  :-[

No, I gave up and used an old wifi dongle. Now, I've bought a new laptop! I'm gonna make that old laptop a Linux machine.

Thanks for the interest.
