I can't see any attached images (and probably any other attachments) without being logged in.

Don't even get the usual incredibly annoying links to a page which will tell you you can't see this without being registered and logged in.

Makes posters glibly talking about something that isn't there look like idiots.

As a guest you wont be able to see attachments, only images that are linked to an external server.
The posters are talking about something that IS there, but only for logged in members.

There is no indication that anything could be there so 99.9999999% of internet users will just think the forum has a high proportion of idiots making no sense.

At least with links you can't open without being registered and logged in 99.9999999% of internet users will only think the admins are idiots.

No option for that in this forum software.
You can either allow guests to view attachments or not.

And you chose to not allow 99.999999% of internet users (guests) to view attachments because?

Why do you let them view the forum at all?

the forum want more members. as someone said, the more the merrier. so guest can see the discussion, if they like, they register. but simply put, not everything is free. but once you become a member and found out you dont like the pictures, there will be always "Delete this account" button.
ps: if i want to share some "confidential" info to the members only, i have the option to embed it in pictures. got the idea? ;)

Denying guests to view the pictures or attachments is also a way to keep the traffic down.

I am complaining on behalf of the hundreds of millions of non-members.

If you have a reason for blocking attachments to non-members why can't you state it? Is it a secret?

And the visitors are more likely to become members when they see posts from members looking like idiots talking about things that don't exist?

The main reason, as already mentioned, is to keep bandwidth down.

Guess what, there are even forums where guest can't see most or even any of the postings.
This is not the case here and probably won't be for a long time.

1) you were a guest, if you registered due to some idiots in the forum, then you are an idiot yourself.
2) there is no idiot here.

This should now be fixed. I found the option to enable image attachments for Guests

why give the little idiot his way ? I have a dormant forum for Rotatact, I get many registrations from spam bots and it accounts for 2/3 of my monthly bandwidth and I run several websites !

If third party hosts find that the images are being very active they will block the content as image hosts are also not in the game for giving away too much for free and after they have used so much bandwidth will block the content so not even registered users will be able to benefit.

I'd also not allow guest accounts/posts around here. Registration is free and quick what the hell is his problem ?

I believe i started this topic when we we getting modertors and I could not see external images as the default settings where a bit dippy for moderators. Then someone comes along, posts as a guest to protest about how the forum is run.

External image hosters will limit bandwidth so there is the possibility that the legitimate forum users may end up missing out

Well, it was just amusing that you'd wait three and a half months to respond to a perfectly reasonable request which Dave has long-since sanctioned and enabled, to a guest user who wouldn't even receive any notification that you'd responded, and with such bizarre vitriol.

Calling a potential member of the forum community a "little idiot" and telling them that they're "bang out of order" hardly seems like the way to convince someone new that they should join, and in any case the original issue no longer exists.

why does someone need to post as a guest. If they want to post and be a part of the forum then they just need to register for free and they will get the content they were complaining of missing, some people just want to be trouble. Yes I failed to see the date was a long time ago (I was brought back to this thread by a spam report) and was aware that dave changed the system from reading the last posts, that is of course up to him and I don't know what hosting plan he has. As I said letting all in sundry view all of the content can become a bandwidth problem quite quickly. As I said i have a dormant forum and by dormant I mean NO REAL PERSON visits it EVER but me once a month to delete the spambot accounts that are not even active and that forum has a bandwidth usage of 600+ MB per month (thats just so that up to 1000 bots a month register) with no real use and has no images while all other sites I run have a bandwidth of 300 MB and have images.

If someone is going to come along whining about how the forum is run before they even join perhaps we don't really need to convince them to join, the forum is what it is, if you really like it you will stay, not start a case on behalf of millions of unknowing non users !
