Cheap scopes shootout
« on: July 21, 2012, 12:31:39 pm »
After seeing the video about Siglent scopes I really wish to see a 300$ DSO shootout. You could test scopes like Rigol, Siglent, Owon, Uni-t and Atten. I think it would be hugely appealing to lots of beginners.
If anything can go wrong, it will.

Yes, certainly!
But rigol's out of the 300$, that would be the 400$ segment

Such a shootout would be interesting. I like the siglent, there are some 100mhz scopes on ebay.

Wouldn't the rigol just win if it were ti be in the $300 range? Since Dave recommends it and uses it a lot in his videos.

Please go for it. You never did a 1 hour review of the Rigol.

I probably wouldn't be concerned about price range as such, just the cheapest scope from each manufacturer.
One of the problems is the whole OEM re-badging thing, and trying to keep up. Some makers seem to do just one run of some model before moving on.
Also, the (often big) price and availability differences in various countries.
The Rigol has been very remarkable in that it is still available and on sale in almost every country 3-4 years later?

Dave.

I'd say an intro explaining bandwidth, rise time, triggering and memory depth. For myself a person with poor vision a larger screen was a factor.

A scope is normally focused on a particular job, what are you going to do with it? is a good question to ask yourself.

That is a very valuable comment!

If you are doing a lot of work where you are really verifying results you have already simulated, you need an instrument which has accurate readouts of the parameters you need to check, plus fast setup, good facilities to export waveform displays to a PC,etc.

If you are interested in fault finding & repair of digital stuff, you need a 'scope which gives a good display of these signals, sometimes at the expense of its performance on analog signals.
A built in logic analyser would also be nice, but not at these prices.

If you are doing mainly analog repair, you need a 'scope that gives a display whether there is an input or not,so you can measure DC rails,& other DC potentials with it,but also be able to see any hum or noise on these signals.
Early DSOs were lousy at this,so many people, including myself, were "put off".

Of course,if you want to look at very fast clock signals ,& the like, that is a different animal altogether,& out of this price range.

That would be nice, but in the end it comes down to what I can get my hands on really.

Just adding to this because of my other post.
I would love to see a $400 - $1000 shootout.
Please Dave don't use any really cheap $99 scopes those things are bloody useless!
If anyones serious about Electronics $400 msrp on a new scope is the lowest, if you can't afford that you should be looking for older scopes on eBay.
The Optimist says the glass is half full, the Pessimist says its half empty, an engineer only see's a glass that’s twice as big as it needs to be!

Seen it, thanks.  I was just trying to point out that a minimum price should be set so those pieces of crap are not even up for debate.

Dave.

Dave, I can lend you my Uni-T UTD1025CL portable 25Mhz oscilloscope multimeter, with all leads and accessories. So long as you don't blow it up on me.
I live in Brisbane and can post it down to you.
This is one of the newer affordable ScopeMeters on the market from Uni-T. Typically goes $340 AUD (incl. postage).

Send me a PM if you want to do a review on it. In return you can put on a cuppa for me if I ever meetup with you.

Anyway, I will be down in Sydney area around December-January and we can meetup, but don't expect me to know much about electronics as I am a serious n00b. My background is mechanical and gemstones.
If you have not got a Fluke 123 or above ScopeMeter you can review and compare both my Fluke 123 and Uni-T 1025CL scopes. I reckon both of these scopes are similar to each other, but since I am clueless and n00b I wouldn't really know.  :(

One thing I did not like about the Uni-T scopemeters is the really bad delay continuity test.

Anyway, PM me if interested.
Cheers,
Matt.
