Country flag, text?
« on: September 10, 2022, 05:27:20 am »
Dave, bonjour

bravo for the fine eevblog forum.

Very often an OP doesn't mention his location. It's helpful even in topics besides WTB/FS, eg asking for advice on compliance, or a new product marketing.

With over 120 countries and flag, the tiny flag icons are sometimes unrecognizable

A text  or perhaps a 2..3 letter country code will be appreciated!

Just the ramblings of an old retired EE

You can hover your mouse over the flag to get the name of the country.

Hi Jon,

don't know on what kind of device you look at the forum, but on a normal computer you can hoover with the mouse over the flag and it will show in text the name of the country.

But the flag represents the country someone selects and not the location they enter in a separate field. In my profile I set the location to France, which is where I live now, but my nationality is Dutch, and that is what my flag shows.

For me that was a logical choice, to show that I'm Dutch, to give some insight in my cultural background.

So it is not always correct, and others might even set it at random, to not reveal anything.

My standby, when the battery charge runs out on the laptop, is an ancient iPad.
It only shows the flag, not the country name.
I'm not sure if the new ones do---my wife has a new one, but I haven't tried with it.

Images on websites may have so-called "alt text" defined, which is supposed to described the contents of the image.
The text is shown in place of the image before it loads or used by screen readers for blind users.

Flags on this forum have alt texts defined, they are two letter country codes.

Try to find if there is any means of seeing the alt text in your browser.
Or the name of the image file on the server, because it's the same.

Any sort of "element properties" window or similar?
Sorry, I'm not familiar with those mobile browsers.

Touch and hold.

Edit: the country name will be on top of the opened menu , as tiny as the flag icon itself, LoL.
