Forum picture efficiency
« on: May 21, 2011, 05:19:36 pm »
I uploaded a 52kB jpeg in this https://www.eevblog.com/forum/index.php?topic=3483.msg46415#msg46415 thread.

The image embedded in the thread is a 300kB png 'thumbnail' which links to the original 52kB jpeg.

Yes, I've mentioned this before.

The forum software encodes all thumbnails >500x500 as 32-bit PNGs which often take more space than the originals.

It's much worse for monochrome PNGs, see attached image which is only 1.2kB but the thumbnail is 62kB.

Reducing the resolution of all thumbnails down to something more reasonable like 100x100 8-bit would be more reasonable. It would also be good if it only reduced the resolution to pictures over a certain file size, say 5kB (that way most monochrome PNGs won't be scaled down) but I doubt the forum software is intelligent enough to do that.

Attachment thumbnail size changed to 100x100
I don't seem to have any option for PNG or JPG or quality etc.

Looks like the PNG image I just attached is now 4,695 bytes as a thumbnail

Dave.

Good, hopefully this will take some load off the server.
