Ground Loops!
« on: March 07, 2016, 04:50:49 am »
I am having issues with multiple switchmode regulators powered by the same source causing interfefence on a VGA cable on an open-air PC. Electricity is flowing through the shield on the cable, causing interference.

Perhaps Dave could explain

1. What is a ground loop and what causes it?

2. How do you track down the cause and how do you fix it?

Currently I have had some luck by adding commonmode chokes to everything and jumping a seperate wire from one end of the VGA cable to the other so electricity follows its path instead of the shield, but I can still see noise on the analog driven screen.

What do you think? Should Dave do a video on ground loops?
