i love you Dave, but... this is what i got in mIRC...
(seem i cannot login, will find another way again) :(

-irc.afternet.org- *** Looking up your hostname
-irc.afternet.org- *** Checking your IP against DNS ban lists
-irc.afternet.org- *** Couldn't look up your hostname
-Saffron.US.AfterNET.Org- Sorry mechatrommer, your Internet Address (IP 203.82.95.77) is listed by UCEPROTECT as being a historically abusive host, so we are regulating connections from it.
-Saffron.US.AfterNET.Org- PLEASE READ http://afternet.org/rbl for more detailed instructions and options!
-Saffron.US.AfterNET.Org- You may use your AuthServ account to be allowed in anyway, by typing '/QUOTE PASS /yourusername/yourpassword' at the prompt now.

Sounds like someone has been hacking from your IP. If you have a dynamic IP then this is quite common.
Disconnecting the power to your adsl router for a few minutes will force it to reconnect and get a different IP which might work better.

Or you could create and use a authserv account as it says, then it should let you connect

The link in the server messages you quoted offer several options on that front ;)  (Easiest is probably just to register an account and then use it when prompted...)

I'm not seeing any window for entering text (and nobody else seems to be chatting either). Is that the way it's supposed to be?

On the webchat the input box is at the bottom -- here, I see it kinda disappears into the page background because they're both white and there's no border apart from a grey line above it.  As for nobody chatting, it's a little quiet at the moment but I'll say hi if I happen to be watching next time you pop in :)

G'day Guys,
I used to use MIRC for years until I built this 64 bit puter then mirc wouldn't work properly, so I ended up switching to IceChat which is freeware and in my opinion MUCH better than mirc. I've been on the irc channel now for about 2 weeks and never seen Dave in there which is a shame as it would be great to have chat over a few doz beers.

Cheers Bryan
